Do What You Need To Do, Not What You Want To Do
Today’s business environment requires that a manager multitask continuously. Often, we have a zillion tasks that must be done today.
There are tasks that we like to do and there are tasks that we hate to do. Of course, the tasks that we like to do are the tasks that we want to do.
However, through my years in leading and managing, I have learned to categorize tasks in a different way. I think it is a simple system. To become an effective leader, you must do the tasks that need to be done – not the tasks you want to do.
Most of us have been taught to use the 4-Quadrant Method when setting goals and priorities. (Picture above) This is an extremely effective tool. If you haven’t learned this method, then do it now. Sit down and make your list of priorities and apply each one to this quadrant. Then, re-write your list of priorities according to what the quadrant shows. 80% of your priorities should come from Quadrant 1 or 2. Tasks that are important and urgent are your “Need To Do” tasks.
Now, you have your ‘Need To Do’ list and not a ‘Want To Do’ list. You’ll be able to see your efficiency rise; you’ll get more done and at the end of the day, you’ll have that sense of satisfaction of an accomplished day.
After doing this exercise a few times, you’ll begin to “think” in the 4-Quadrant Method as you work. I call it ‘Quadrant Thinking’ or a “Quadrant Mindset”. Quadrant Thinking has many benefits. A Quadrant Mindset provides:
- Better results
- Higher efficiency
- You’ll be seen as a leader that get’s results (because you do)
- You’ll not allow yourself to be pulled away from your priorities
Remember: Do What You Need To Do – Not What You Want To Do
