Employee Review: It’s Your Review
With the new year fast approaching, I’m reminded that it’s annual employee review time at many companies. If you are getting ready to do annual reviews, consider this:
When you do an employee review, you are actually doing your own review.
As you complete each item, goal or result, consider what you did to make that employee better in that area. Or, consider what you didn’t do that could have made the employee achieve better results.
Ultimately, the buck stops with you. Ponder the following:
1) Did you give specific, clear goals?
2) Did you set a time deadline for the result to be achieved?
3) Did you give critical feedback as necessary?
4) Did you give timely feedback?
5) Did you hold that employee accountable to the goals that were set?
Notice that in every question, there is the word “you”. You are responsible and accountable for your employees. Therefore, just remember, that when you do an employee review, you are doing your own review.
